OF all the animals on the planet earth, humans are very nearly the only ones to get acne or pimples. The only other species to have been found with acne outside of the laborotory are some types of Mexican hairless dogs. So why is this? Acne makes us less desirable (or at least makes us feel less desirable) and can cause severe depression. Why, have the human race been inflicted with acne?
Scientists are saying it’s because we evolved too quickly and lost our hair. The sebum in our skins, which now clogs our pores and causes acne was once produced to lubricate our hairy skins. Humans lost our hair too quickly and our sebaceous glands was slower to adapt.
If we hadn’t lost our hair, the sebum would still be useful and lubricating our hairy faces. Think about it – you never see a hairy werewolf.
It’s almost like a cruel joke that as humans evolved to a point that we are really aware of our appearance and it is important in today’s culture, that we develop acne. Thank you evolution!
On a more positive note, Science is moving forward all the time and finally acne and its terrible psychological effects is being recognized for the awful disease it is. There are treatments out there, that will completely cure acne or at least minimize it. In my case, accutane worked wonders, but I know that it’s not right for everyone. It’s just a case of finding out what one is right for you.
