Racism and sexism (along with all the other ‘isms’) within any society goes hand and hand with teachings passed down from generation to generation. And this is based loosely on the idea that because men are more ‘sexual beings’ (or the accepted sexual beings); it’s a given that a man will seek to fulfill his sexual desires for a woman’s body (may she like it or not) if she draws to much attention to herself. Although though many in our society (American) have tried to steer clear of these beliefs; there are still those who feel that these attacks are welcomed based on a woman’s style of dress.

This is the reason why many people (with out second thought) ask “well what did she do to bring on such behavior?” when facing issues surrounding rape/sexual assault. Her fashion leads to people questioning her sexual history, possible promiscuity, and her marital status (is she single, married, unfaithful?). People associate revealing clothing with sexual intercourse. And any woman who dresses revealing for all to see (in their reasoning) is obviously seeking intercourse (being sarcastic).

Do keep in mind that the term ‘provocative’ varies from culture to culture. In the U.S. We think of a woman half dressed, leaving little to human imagination. But in various of the Middle East, Africa, or Asia, this could be seen as a woman showing too much of her ankle and/or lower leg, hair being uncovered, or being able to see more than her eyes through her vial. An African Political leader had rape charges filled against him dropped because his victims was ‘too It fell a half inch above her kneecaps; in which he felt that it was his duty to satisfy her sexual desires.

Because the female anatomy is seen as sensuous and alluring, many feel that it’s a woman’s responsibility to cover her self up; for the simple fact that ‘its in a mans nature to desire a woman’; or because men are visually stimulated. And when a woman goes against the grain and dawns her ‘western garb’ she’s seen as not only defying the teachings of her elders but she’s giving society the finger so to speak. She’s rebelling against her parents, her community, her religion and her race. Thus, in their mind comes the justification for the reaction she may receive to her new found identity. I find that women in some of the poorest countries overseas and communities stateside tend to suffer more harsh treatment when issues of sexuality or morality. And this is attributed to the dogma of religion and cultural teachings.

The young Indian males where not seen as being rebellious or in the wrong. In the eyes of their leaders they where just attending school, seeking to their education. And because immigrants face such scrutiny in other countries, many within the Indian community felt as if these individuals where being targeted based on race alone. Never mind the fact that they where possibly leaving an unlit, unsecure area of the school campus. To them, it had to be a well planned attack against these individuals because of who they are. They where not trying to change their societies views, they where not trying to go against the norm, so the only reasoning that could be reached would be racism.
