Mark, I do understand the point you are making about translation. I am not a Hebrew scholar either (though I am trying to do more and more word studies), so I do not know what weight they put on words. It’s my impression from reading the old testament (which I used to read primarily through the NIV) they generally blamed or credited God for most things that happened, sometimes themselves or nature, but mostly God. The devil just didn’t seem to factor into it at all (except in Job, but even then under the authority of God), so you find that in the Hebrew. Even in Genesis, they reduced the most heinous act ever perpetrated on man to the image of a subtle or crafty snake; they didn’t even call him evil. But Genesis is where evil was introduced as of the result of eating of the forbidden tree of the knowledge of good and “evil.” Gen. 2:9
Our primarily secular, humanistic and emotional mindsets of today speaking of Americans, though I think the same could apply to many developed countries) don’t put the same weight on words as the Hebrew people did. Everything in scripture, Hebrew or Greek, relates to GOD, because it’s His Word, not simply a history book. But we allow in our various cultures, and I believe in too many modern translations, that good is simply good and bad is just bad and even all that is relative; we tend to assign credit or blame, but it’s not usually to God or the devil.
As for the scriptural examples you pointed out in the verses in Nehemiah and Ezekiel I think I can best explain how I interpret them by deferring mainly to Romans chapter 8. More and more I try to read the entire Bible in relation to the New Testament and more to Jesus and His representation of God.
First though, I thought it very interesting how you pointed out the usage of the word “noisome.” It’s only found in the KJV 4 times—twice in Ezekiel as an adjective to describe the beasts, once in Psalms 91:3 to describe a “pestilence” which is in that case possibly a diseased or infected wound, and once in Revelations to describe a type of “sore” or pus filled wound such as a boil or ulcer, the result of a plague perhaps.
Of the 4 times the word noisome is used in the KJV only twice is it translated from the word ra`, both times in Ezekiel. In Psalms the word translated is havvah, which means:
1) desire–a) desire (in bad sense)
2) chasm (fig. of destruction)–a) engulfing ruin, destruction, calamity
“Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.” Psa. 91:3
A “noisome pestilence” in this verse is analogy for a nasty wound to a bird from a bird trap, so I believe the descriptor 2 is most likely.
And the word translated as “noisome” in Revelations is: kakos, which means:
1) of a bad nature–a) not such as it ought to be
2) of a mode of thinking, feeling, acting–a) base, wrong, wicked
3) troublesome, injurious, pernicious, destructive, baneful
“And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image.” Rev. 16:2
In this instance, the word “sore” is translated from the word: helkos, which is:
1) a wound, esp. a wound producing a discharge pus
2) a sore, an ulcer
Sounds like maybe a plague to me.
Even in Ezekiel 14:15, I believe he is specifically referring to diseased animals, possibly even diseased cows. However in Ezekiel 14:21, in the KJV: “For thus saith the Lord GOD; How much more when I send my four sore judgments upon Jerusalem, the sword, and the famine, and the noisome beast, and the pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast?” The word ra` is translated here both as “sore” and “noisome.” the word “sore” in the KJV is most often associated with or used in relation to a disease or physical affliction.
I do not understand your interpretation that the word “noisome” means “wild.” Still, to me the word wild seems to defer the blame away from man or the devil, even from sin, making it seem so common and expected, so natural—it’s just the nature of the beast, it’s just life, the way God created animals—wrong!

As for the “beasts,” even the scripture you quoted from in Ezekiel with this paragraph: “The word of the LORD came again to me, saying, Son of man, when the land sinneth against me by trespassing grievously, then will I stretch out mine hand upon it, and will break the staff of the bread thereof, and will send famine upon it, and will cut off man and beast from it:…” Ezk. 14:12-13
Also Paul says: “For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of the creature (all nature, everything created) waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God. For the creature was made subject (as in bondage) to vanity (frailty, to futility, condemned to frustration), not willingly, but by reason of Him who hath subjected the same in hope, because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.” Rom. 8:18-23 (parenthesis mine or added from the AMP)
I believe bondage to corruption would be speaking in relation to the devil since he is the prince of this world and those subject to him are under his rule.
Peter said referring to the “unjust” or unsaved: “While they promise them they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.” 2 Pet. 2:19
And Paul said: “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the that form of doctrine which was delivered you.” Rom. 6:16-17
My personal opinion—in scripture there is no simple bad or unpleasant, if it can be translated as evil it likely is evil, and evil is from the devil. But that’s me.

Mark, I checked out your blog page and I see the work you do. I admire that very much. I do realize how blessed I am to have so many translations to choose from. I’m thankful more and more people are able to read the Word of God in their own languages too, because I believe that is what God intended. (Considering that the original New Testament documents were recorded in the common Greek language of the street and not the classical Greek of the scholars, I believe God wanted every man to be able to “read” His Word.) I also believe if we allow the Holy Spirit it is through scripture where God will truly speak to our No external or extracurricular resources required.
I pray God’s hands through the Holy Spirit are at work in all those who do such translations.
